This, the fourth free Luminar AI upgrade, comes with the highly anticipated addition of the 3D Portrait Bokeh AI tool, Luminar AI update 4 (1.4.0), helps empower creative photographers and photo-artist with even more simplicity for complicated math.

What is Bokeh AI?

If you are reading this early, the Luminar AI update 4 is due for release on the 27th of July, which will include the dedicated Bokeh AI Tool for the first time.

Bokeh AI provides a simple way to create that hazy background effect you can achieve from taking photos with a shallow depth of field. 

For example, where the subject matter may be in sharp focus, whilst the background is blurred or has out-of-focus spots of light. 

Bokeh AI will give your photos that authentic “high-quality lens at maximum aperture” effect.

3D Portrait BokehAI

The long-awaited Portrait BokehAI feature will help Luminar Creatives achieve dreamy and spectacular portraits. Using artificial intelligence, this tool quickly analyses the depth of an image, and creates a beautiful background blur in seconds, adding a realistic and dreamy 3D bokeh effect to your portraits.

Textures with Visual Preview

The improved Textures tool gives you incredible new possibilities. Create special borders and other effects to package your creative photographic pieces.

Shifting Horizon Control in Sky AI

Using the Shifting Horizon Control slider in the Sky Orientation section, deliver realistic results even faster with SkyAI.

As you may already be aware, Skylum are constantly improving the algorithms behind their AI tools. And now, with SkyAI you can replace the sky and set the desired position of your horizon line for achieving exactly what you want. Plus, there are lots more improvements and additions to explore.

The term bokeh comes from the Japanese word boke (暈け or ボケ), meaning haze (halo) or blurred.

Bokeh is often described as the aesthetically pleasing way in which a camera lens produces out-of-focus points of light. Affected by aperture shape and lens aberrations, different bokeh effects are formed.

There are a number of things that Luminar AI can do, that both Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom cannot. However, to mention every aspect concerning what Luminar AI can do, that Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom can’t, may not be a worthwhile exercise. Especially as there are always new developments from both Skylum software and Adobe.

However, there are perhaps 2 things worth knowing; 

Firstly, Luminar AI is non-destructive, meaning; it will always retain your original image, whereas to date, this is not the case with Adobe’s offerings.. 

Secondly, Luminar AI is built on the premise of making complexity simple. Unlike most tools and methods of editing using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Luminar AI allows you to achieve edits by simply selecting a tool and adjusting its intensity with the use a simple slider. 

This makes editing  much faster than with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. But here’s, the great news; Luminar AI works as both a standalone or plugin / extension app with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
